World Championship - Last 16

Sam's run has ended......losing 13-11 to one of the best exponents of matchplay snooker in the modern era, but what a fighter!

It was a another late night finish at the Crucible that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The match was compelling, it had everything and everyone, except for the Selby camp, wanted it to go to a decider. Both players dug deep to put on a display of great potting, excellent safety exchanges, solid break building, near misses and nail bitingly tense moments. The unpredictable table conditions served only to add to the drama that unfolded as Sam bravely drew level at 11-11 after being 7-11 behind in this best of 25 encounter.

At the 'end of the day' Credit must go to Mark Selby who came through in the end. Something tells me he will be privately grateful for being put to the test, given the recent break from tournament play, he will see it as a wake-up call and good preparation leading into the final stages such is the character of the man.

Sam will be disappointed, who wouldn't be, but he will also be philosophical about his experience of reaching the last 16 of the World Championships. To have got so close, against the World number one, over the best of 25, at the Crucible, in very difficult and unpredictable conditions, will make him realise just how far his game has progressed.

Confidence waxes and wanes as a result one's actions....a confident Sam Baird is a very exciting prospect!
