The euphoria of the World Championship seems a long time past and Sam has since played three qualifiers. The main aim this season is to improve on the current ranking of 46th. The first three events have not been great but two out of qualifications is okay. First up was the Indian Open and a comfortable 4-0 against Alex Borg. Next was the World Open and Sam had a bad start to the match falling 4-1 behind against Allan Taylor before he eventually found some form. The poor start proved crucial when at 3-4 down he attempted a slow black along the cushion to draw level and when the black drifted out to the end result was a 5-4 defeat. The final match in this mini-series of qualifiers was the Riga Masters against Daniel Wells. After losing the first frame Sam fought back to lead 2-1 and left Daniel needed snookers on the final red in frame five. Daniel was not going to cave in easily and made things awkward for Sam before Sam eventually won the frame to go 3-1 up. The final frame ended in similar fashion with Daniel again needing snookers on the last red. However, Sam once against came good to win the match 4-1.
